Obsolete from VW and no luck at GSF. Will take it out and drive round various places (don't know where yet) and try and match it.

Any suggestions???

If your old one is anything like mine was it will bear no resemblance to the new one you need. It was a while ago I changed it but from memory its only an 'O' ring and I think if you ring a VW dealer and ask them to look it up  even though its obsolete their system will give the dimensions.
You could then try a hydraulic engineer who should be able to get you one or perhaps make one. Hope this helps.

Are you asking about the front cover plate on the filter housing for the GTi with an oil cooler?

I am going to my dealer in a day or two to order something and will check on that part if you want/can wait. It still shows as being good in my program, but I have not up-dated it yet, waiting for the latest up-date. It is listed as a "part number" and not as standard hardware so no demensions are given to compare with a hardware store seal.

That would be great - thanks

Don't want you to think that I forgot about you. I just could not make it to the dealer the last two days but will for sure tomorrow. If they are still being sold do you just want the part number or do you want some sent? It would be cheaper if you get them local as postage would be more than the seal I think.

Well can't provide good news this time. It is discontinued as of 2007 sometime and I can't get them here either. Guess the part number would be usless to you too. I do know the size is 53mm X 3mm (or maybe 3.2mm). I have two in the garage and measured one incase you want to locate something at a hardware store. That is 53mm total circumference and material is 3mm or 3.2mm in diameter. If you can only find say 52mm or maybe even 51mm I think it will stretch.

Thanks for trying.  Also thanks for the measurements they will be very helpful.  By the way where in Germany are you based?

Ops!!  :hand:  I just went back through what I posted about the o-rong size and discovered I boo booed. The 53mm is not the circumference but the total diameter. So, 53mm from outside to outside anywhere around the ring (it's round).

Sorry to bring this up again but does anyone know the exact size of this this oil seal?

I reomoved the seal, which is now completly flat and hard, not surprising its leaking.  I measure it with a piece of string to get the circumference and the diameter worked out as 51mm.

I had a seal sent to me which was too big at 55mm the only one I found localy was 49mm x 4mm.  It was a bit thick and small but streched to fit.  Bolted the cover back on…no leak, sorted.

After a drive the seal seems to have melted a little. Probably couldn't handle the heat from the oil. It will probably degrede and start leaking agian sooner or later.

So I need another one the right size that can handle the heat. Whate a mare..

The size I posted above is correct as it came from a new seal. 53mm is the diameter of the outside of the o-ring and 3-3.2 is the thickness. I checked the link above and nothing was close enough, but the material would be perfect. I would guess that because you streched the o-ring and it sounds to be common rubber, the heat started to cause cracks in it. You do have three options; 1) locate a VW replacemet (sorry I use mine and will not sell them), 2) find one somewhere at a local hardware store which fits good and 3) trace and cut a paper type gasket to fit between the cover and housing. There is enough surface area on both to support a paper gasket and that should work just fine.

You don't need a rubber gasket. VW sell a sealant (in a tube) that can be used. I did mine about 2 years ago (as they are no longer stocked) and it's perfect. Never leaks (from there anyway!). You just need to careful how you apply it. TBH most of the seals are now out of stock as car gets older. If you took it to VW themselves to service they would do exactly that.
