Novice Needs Help

I started my golf today and smoke started coming from the bonnet.  On opening the bonnet the smoke was coming from the inlet manifold and air box.  There was a strong smell of petrol and petrol also pouring out of the bottom of the airbox.  I have not tried restarting just in case I cause more damage.

The engine is a 1.9 tsr.  If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Cheers

Rob

If you've got petrol in the airbox then it must be coming from the fuel distributor. People on here do dismantle them but if I were you I would look for a replacement. Be careful though, you're working right next to the battery, you can take it out but even the smallest load could give a spark if you disconnect it. When I was looking for a MK1 some time ago I was offered a 1600 that someone had caught on fire trying to rectify a problem just like yours, it was repairable but a real mess.

they dont normally just fail, id be checking over the entire fuel system, tank and neck for rusticles.  could be rust has got into metering head and buggered up all the fine tolerances inside.

kr 16v metering head and wur would be a good upgrade for a 1.9 tsr lump, but make sure any potential problems are fixed first!
