Fuel Pump issues

Hi im new on here but alrerady hitting you with some technical questions or easy to some of you maybe, Ive owned my Mk1 for 2 wks now i new it didnt start when i brought it its old owner(my Brother) used to start it every day then he said one day he turned the key and he didnt hear the fuel whiring noise and then it never started again. Roll on 4 yrs its in my possesion now and ive renewed the fuses and a new battery and spark plugs, still no look so then renewed the fuel sender regulator and pump from inside the tank and good job i did as the old one was basically rusted in half and hanging by a thread(of wires) still no sound and so have moved to the fuel pump under the car ive taken it off and then i put the pump into some water and connected the pump to battery it didnt do or make any noise or pump water as i presumed it should?? So the question is, is it the fuel pump or should i be looking at elsewhere as well

I would not have put it in water. Sounds like it was dead before it went for a bath anyway. What I did to check the pump was getting power was to make myself a test bulb. Two bits of wire and a bulb, you get the idea. Once you have tested your new bit of kit on the battery move to the wiring for the pump, under the car rear axle. Connect it up and turn on ignition. My guess it will light up.

If it lights up you need a pump

Ok so spent a few hrs with mk1 today in my garage after visiting GSF in coventry who were brilliant and gave discount on some parts id ordered including a new fuel pump which i later fitted and then got in car and its still made no fueling noise so now im thinking its electrical problem again. I double checked fuses and moved some of them around and then noticed no 2 had blown so replaced that and still no whirring noise so still no start. hooked up a small electric tester and it does seem like the fuel pump isnt getting any power but when i tested the connection to the in tank fuel pump that had power. I know im gonna have to investigate further so any advice would be greatfully recieved as its looking like a longer project than had hoped just to get the thing moving. :P

I had to go out and buy a fuel tank yesterday so I know how you feel. Double check fuses. Make sure the pump is wired up properly + - and only then think about relays. The pump relay is no 2 and fuel injection is 15 only if you have a later model. It must be something simple if it just stopped one day.
Ps don't know if relay 15 has anything to do with pump just that it is related to fueling. Good luck
