Mk1 Cab with Mk3 2.0 8v engine

Hi Guys
Sorry for the essay but hoping someone may have a idea please!

I have got a mk1 Gti cab which has got a mk3 2.0 8v AGG i bought it off a friend of mine who has had it the last 13 years and had a G60 lump in a one point but took it off the road and left it in the garage with no engine after selling the G60. The engine is all fitted and plumbed in but doesnt run currently. I have an automotive electrican sorting the wiring for me as I definetly dont know what im doing! It was supplied without the tranponder key so I needed a new ECU transpondcer etc. which I bought a full set off ebay and he said there is no pulse to the injectors but everything else seems fine so I need to buy another ECU, immoibliser, keys etc off ebay as this one must be faulty. Is there anything else this is likely to be as I have a new ECU etc set ready for him to come back but if it doesnt work again is there something else that would stop a pulse getting to injectors? I made sure it was a matching ecu to the orginal also!

thank you in advance!

excellent i will try that! thanks

It is AGG.

does it need the ignition module from the mk3 engine? as it has been wired straight to the starter motor which I was told is okay as its got a later one on which is similiar to a mk2 one?! The motor electrician that was trying to sort it is a good motor electrician, but not a VW hero like yourself!, and he was confused why its not there and has run out of ideas!

thanks again

whenever i make a mk3 loom i will bin off the crappy mk3 coil as they are unreliable and splice in the mk1/2 tci loom so the mk2 coil can be used, much more reliable. note if its got the old mk1 coil on there it might not vbe suitable, either it could be points ignition one or the fitting for the king lead is incorrect for the mk3 leads. woudlnt stop injector pulse though!

to wire it you need a tci loom off a mk1/2 chop the dizzy plug off and splice pin 6 to the mk3 coil red/green wire. the other 2 dizzy pklug wires are unused, and the rest of the tci loom goes back on the same way it was on the mk2. so earth to battery, ignition and trigger wires to the coil + and - respectively.

shouldnt be anywhere near the starter motor though!

yeah the mk3 is a 3 pin plug, you cut the plug off put a spade on the black wire, bin the brown and splice the green/red to the tci plug on your mk1/2 tci loom pin 6. if you pull the rubber boot of the 7 pin tci plug the pin numbers are under that :)

the black wire is the ignition feed to the coil +, then on the tci loom theres a black spade which also goes to the coil +. you then have a spark trigger from tci to coil -ve, a brown wire to battery -ve and a red/black wire from the coil -ve to the fusebox for the rev counter.

bosch/vw coils are labelled 15 for +, and 1 for -

and heres the full tci pinout:
1 coil - or 1
2 battery -
4 coil + or 15
6 splice to the red/green wire on mk3 coil plug

one more stupid question! (actually thats a lie there will probably be more!)

whats the tci?

its the 7 pin thing in the scuttle attached to a big heat sink, also known as the spark unit/module. TCI stands for transistor controlled ignition, in case you were wondering

the mk3 golf unit has the TCI unit and coil combined, since the TCI modules get very hot the MK3 item is prone to fail thanks to the compact package and its location above the hot exhaust manifold. the MK1/2 unit is located in a nice cool place with a bigger heatsink so rarely fails :)

that makes sense as thats what he was calling the ignition module which is what he was saying is missing! one big issue now then is where that is as I cant see it anywhere! or a spare 7 pin plug hanging around hopefully the last owner hasnt cut it out the loom!

right then add that plus the tci->dizzy coil loom to your shopping list if you want to use a mk2 coil :)

the mk3 coil has a 3 pin plug on it and will work fine, though you'll need to run a wire from the -ve terminal; under the flap on the side to your fusebox if you want the rev counter to work

any mk1 or mk2 with electronic ignition will do, the digifant gti and 16v ecu looms have the section you need too just has more wiring to bin ;)
