No idle

hi guys hope everyone had a good weekend
took the golf for its first proper run down too newquay this weekend and it went like a dream! Mr Matthews little rocker cover trick has stopped the smoking and it didnt use a drop of coolant so no problem with the head.

But i have realised there is no idle!! well not when its cold anyway
once the engine warms up its ok.
When i start it up the revs go up to 1300-1400 then slowly drop but they dont stop. they just keep on dropping untill it stalls.
So what controls the idle when cold and (Rich) how much?

Cheers
Steve

Steve,

Sounds like the aux air valve is working, so might be a problem with the warm up reg not controlling fuel pressure correctly for the phase between aux air valve closing and fully warmed up.

No Idle

Hi Steve

What was the 'Rocker cover' trick!!

there was white smoke coming out of the exhaust and it was leaving a huge plume of smoke under acceleration so much so that i thought it was piston rings and started preparing to shell out for a new botom end.
Steve Matthews kept pointing out that there is a filter in the rocker cover whick gets clogged up so i tried it and voila  :D no more smoke

the filter was causing oil to run down the pipes into the air box totally clogging up the filter.

Yup - it fixes nine out of ten oil/engine problems on VW motors...

picked up a gunson mixture tester thingy on the way home tonight.
took the spark plug out of No.1 and it was white
found a long allen key and turned the mixture screw till the spark got to a nice blue colour but now the fast tickover is about 1500 with the idle screw in as far as it will go.
is there another way of getting the idle down or do i have the mixture too rich?
any ideas?

Cheers

With a colourtune you are looking for it to be yellow at idle (even richer than blue) but, saying that, you might find its running at 2000 RPM by then.  Check you havn't go at air leak somewhere and check the ignition advance is set right (TDC on a Mk1 GTI I think).

i do have an air leak! Man your good
the pipe that goes round the back of the manifold (to the AAV i think)
has been rubbing on the clutch cable and has a HUGE split in it!

There is your answer then.  After you reapir that you'll find that all of a sudden, the mixture become very rich and you'll need to lean it right off…
