New cambelt, whizzing noise, help please!!

Hi all,

In the last few days i fitted a new cambelt and tensioner to my Mk1 GTi ('83) and have a slightly worrying "whizzy whirry" noise coming from the area around the top pulleys. I've tensioned the belt to give 90deg twist as i always do, coated some of the belt in tippex to highlight any points of contact and also used the old lump of wood trick to pinpoint the noise and removed the aux drive belt. All of the above hasn't helped me so i'm now starting to wonder if there's a dodgy batch of tensioner bearings going about? I've thrown the old one so can't refit it DOH!  Any pointers would be greatfully received!

I did find my waterpump pulley is slightly warped so not been a complete waste of time :-)

  Cheers,

     Rob.

Tension too tight by about 5 deg, i was using too much force to get my 90deg of twist in the belt. I wonder how many other belt i've over tensioned in the past? :redfaced: This is the first that's made a noise so maybe i've been lucky hehe.

trouble with the 90degree twist is everyones hand is calibrated differently

i found this out with my kr into cabrio swap, my '45 degree twist' was a bit stronger than your average so it whined away liek a mofo. trouble is its a total git to set tension on a kr cabrio as less room to work than 8v

It's only when i was back at work and got called to a conveyor that wasn't tracking straight, and heard the same noise that i realised i'd over tensioned it. Taking tension off a cambelt isn't something i'm comfortable with, especially when i felt it was fine in the first place, live and learn eh!
