need new engine for 83(y) gti what engine codes to look for

Hi there need a new engine for my golf gti would like to do a straight swap in, What i really would like to know is what engine codes can i use and where can i find the code on the engine. I have been told that the car has a 2.0l bottom end in it but would be happy to go back to the standard engine, just want on that does not smoke.  I live in wiltshire and dont really get that much spare time so the easy cheapo option is to swap over any advice would be greatfull thanks
