need a new engine for 1981 mark1 golf gti!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got a 1981 mark1 golf gti 1.6 engine code EG
I live in newcastle, staffordshire
I need a new engine having problems finding new 1.6
would i be better in getting an 1.8 Engine code DX instead, and what parts would be needed for convertion . I appreciate any help, thank you                  

Needed:

Top rad hose


Other variation in parts:

Gearbox (higher FD)
metering head
exhaust back box

To be honest you'd be better off with your 1600 metering head (more top end power, but less fuel economy). If you wanted better acceleration at the expense of noise at cruising speed, then you could also stick with the 1600 gearbox.

why dont you get your own 1.6 recon'd or is it totally kncked

thanks for your replies but i had my orginal engine rebuilt and has failed again within 3months, so am unsure what to do. I think the block is cracked.
