NATIONAL EMEMRGENCY(In Newcastle) My lhasa keeps stalling :(

Good evening.. I'm at work concentrating on my poor poor golf mk1 at home. If any kind souls (which you all are anyway!) could advise me of a solution(s) i would deeply appreciate it.

the problem(s)  : i start the mk1 from cold and it immediately cuts off.  So then……
: i start the car from cold, keep my foot on the gas pedal for a few minutes to let it warm up- which it seems to do, but when driving, the performance is lagging and approaching a junction or at stopping at the lights the car cuts off again

I took the car to an auto electrician/ friend in the hope he could adjust the idle or sort any faulty electrics causing this problem, no joy.  I also bought a 'idle control valve' from my crazy quiff and once fitted- again no joy.  So what could be the CAUSE of FOUL PLAY?

It seems an underlying problem is at hand OR maybe not… Maybe something has been overlooked and the repair is quite easy?  Oh and also could someone please enlighten me on what the difference is between a 'COLD START VALVE' and an 'IDLE CONTROL VALVE'? Thank you for your replies and your time mr crazy_mo_uk

could be the throttle cable grub screw to adjust it on top of the manifold is loose so at idle it isnt idling enough and it is causing it to stall
