Mk2 injectors

Anyone know how big of a task it is to fit mk2 injectors into a mk1 (ideally a 1983 1.6 GLi)?

Thanks,
luke

no reason to, they're the same spec as the original.  you will probably find the mk2 injectors are a different thread, so you'll need the fuel lines from a later mk1 cabby or scirocco. plus remove the top hats from the end.

better off just buying the right ones, look for merc brass injectors on ebay they will fit straight in

Just that there's a pair on fleabay, which may end up going for cheap. Have you have any experience of sending injectors off to be cleaned? Been quoted £45 for 4 which would be a damn sight cheaper than brand new ones!

Thanks,
Luke

Yeah sorry, i mean't a set on ebay which look to be going for cheap. I was looking at them one the other day. Don't know if i can fork out £100 for them at the moment

Do you reckon its worth spending the money and going for new or just getting existing ones cleaned? Mine don't look all the bad from the outside.

personally i would go new, but if the place will guarantee they'll be sorted once cleaned then should be ok?

you can do your own injector test though, pull em out and sit them in 4 equally sized containers. bridge your pump relay so the pump runs constant, then lift the metering head flap manually fully open, then gradually release it back to rest.  check the spray pattern is a ncie even cone on all 4, then disconnect pump relay bridge. next wipe the tips then watch em for a minute to make sure non of them drip.  finally measure the volume delivered is the same for all 4.

if there is a problem on one, swap the injector with one of the others and repeat the test, if problem moves its injector, if not its the metering head or fuel line. if the volume isn't quite equal there is an adjustment you can make on the metering head to even it up

Yeah i've got a copy of the prowlers test saved. It jsut when it comes to the whole bridging the pump relay i get a bit weird with. Not all that good with electrics and really can't afford to screw it all up. Was just going to get them replaced/cleaned as i'm pretty sure the problem is them

all you need is a bit of wire, pull the relay out and bridge the pins where the relay terminals 30 and 87 go into

So all i literally need to do it put a wire from one terminal to the other? then would i need the ignition on? When you say lift the metering head flap, i assume you mean undo the air filter and push from underneath? I'm pretty bad when it comes to this sort of thing!

dont need to touch the ignition, just need the wire and away you go :)
just make sure its a reasonably good bit of wire as it will need to take some load for a bit. nothing massive just dont go using tiny single strand crappy speaker wire or anything ;)

yeah either take the top off the airbox and push it from underneath, or take rubber boot from the top and lift it from there. a magnet would help here as theres nothing really to grab onto from above.

Hi luke, I completed the prowler test on mine a few weeks ago.

Quite easy..  If your local you can borrow all my stuff ..  (4 nescafe bottles and a fused switch)

I sent mine for cleaning and they came back spick and span. and much improved (I tested again before I put them back in) it cost me £46 (10 per injector plus 6 delivery)

The guy did explain to me that because they are mechanical the cleaning will improve but not always solve the problem

Cheers
Tony

Thanks tony but not local. Thanks for the info on the cleaning as well. I shall give this a go and then decide where to go from there.

Sorry to dig up an old post.
Are these injectors suitable for a late Mk1 Cab with a std DX lump?
Surely they are set up to give a higher flow seeing as they are suitable for mercs and ferrari's!

they flow the same as any k-jet injector, the amount of fuel is determined by the metering head rather than the injector itself unlike on later EFI. these injectors are coarse thread and late 8v are fine thread, worst case you'll need to change your fuiel lines for early coarse thread they'll swap right over
