Mk1 Starting problem! (Not starting at all!)

Had some problems last week starting my 1800 mk1. Diagnosed it as a faulty starter motor, so got a new one, tested it works ok. ALl fine.

Put it on the car, and turn the key, but nothing happens! Similar to last time, except I can hear the clunk of the starter gear jumping out, but no turning over! Completly dead.

Also took the time waiting for that starter to change the belts, and rotor arm and HT leads, because I had them lying around. Now as its first time I've done the timing belt, I'm not sure If I've done it exactly right, with timing etc, but I can't see how that would affect the starter not turning over.

First question: How is the starter wired up, as a mate took it off last week, so I didn't see it. There's one smaller connector and two large ring type ones.

Second: The light on the temp guage flashes more than it used to. Used to flash for about 3 secs as I turned the ignition to the main position, then extinguish, and not flash at all after that, but now it flashes all the time!

Can't for the life of me think what it is, and cant see any spare wires or connectors at all!

Any help appreciated!

Cheers,

John
