Mk1 Golf starts from cold, but doesn't start when warmed up

Hi all,

I'm here to pick brains please!

Question…my 1982 1.8 GTI 8v starts from cold in the mornings…and runs absolutely fine, no problem, but…it really struggles to re-start having been turned off if it's been on a journey of more than a few minutes. Even if it's sat for an hour or so, it just struggles to get going. It does eventually start…but it can take up to 30 seconds of turning over before it starts.

It makes trips to the supermarket a real dread…as i know when i come out i've got the fear of it not firing up.

Any ideas? I'm pretty new to this…so any help is welcome.

Cheers
Andy

My warm start problem was due to a presure relief valve in the metering head.  I did change the wur, the csv, the fuel lines, the auxilary air valve, the fuel pump, the accumulator and everything else you could possibly think of! I had the presures tested as well. I would get that done 1st if i was you.

i had similar problem. i was advised the wur (warm up regulator) which i changed and it sorted the problem. mine also took a few turns to start from cold too. i had to pay £200 for the wur off ebay which was new but i know crazy quiffs said they sell recon ones for £100 when they get them in. as smokeybubbles said you would be better getting presure test done first. will be cheaper thyan wur!!!

Well I would just like to say that I have the exact same problem with my 85 clipper.  No problem starting from cold, take her to the shops and sit outside for an hour so she will start again, so frustrating.  I am used to a reliable volvo which starts every time!! So Frustrating but I just LOVE my Mark 1 Golf!

Had exactley this a while back. Turned out metering was leaking and not maintaining fuel pressure. Replaced it, now it's all good. Worth checking I think.

Thanks for all the tips.  I wil have these things checked out as it beats sitting outside the shops for an hour while the car cools down, so it wil start.  When I find the fault i wil repost it on here to help others
Thanks again

Have you checked the non-return valve? Its simple job to test this and a cheap part to replace too.

Seems like you car is not holding fuel pressure once switched off and this is why it must be cranked over and over to start again.
