mk1 golf convertable engine trouble help?

Hello i have a mk1 convertable 1.8 gti A reg it will start and idle fine but when you go to take of or rev the car it just cuts out has anyone got any ideas what it coul be? Would be much appreciated thanks

main things to ignore are the over-run cut off valve and isv parts as you wont have them, you dont have any coolant senders for ecu and isv unit as you dont have those either. plus you may not have the cold throttle enrichment valve and throttle switch depending on the age of it. if you do have a throttle switch it'll be a 2 pin and should pass voltage when throttle is open but not when closed.

for the ignition timing the procedure is the same except you need to disconnect and plug the vacuum hose to the distributor and there is no red/black spade to unplug. for the timing marks they're the same as 16v except for the cam its a small punch mark on the inside of the cam sprocket that lines up to the heat surface:
