Mk1 1.8t cambelt issues

Post

Hi all, I'm stuck! Building up my 1.8t lump with the 16v cambelt tensioner but when belts all on and timed up the cam pulley mark is about 2/3rds of a tooth out? Anyone else had this?

Could be you've got the wrong belt ? Have you the old one & you can compare the number of teeth.

I did think that but its the same length as old belt and number of teeth! Wondering if its maybe a thinner headgasket caused it but I've never known that before.

Can't see it being a head gasket issue either. I'd recheck your cam marks, it a DOHC ?

Just checked pistons with dti gauge to get crank spot on and the mark on the cam is still out by about 2/3rds of a tooth. I'm wondering weather to overcome this ill need a vernier pulley. It won't affect the running I'd just like to have it bang on

Cracked it!
It was caused by the 16v tensioner stud. Didn't realise but there was half a mm or so of slop between tensioner and stud.
Easy fix is a ford bottom ball joint bolt as the shoulder on the bolt is perfect size for centre of tensioner just got to cut off 3 threads, fit it with green locktite and the timing marks are 100%
