Misfire, ropey running & cutting out issues...

Hi all,

I changed the radiator fan yesterday and whilst I was in there notice there was a hole in the foam part of the intake pipe> I gaffer taped this up and took the car for a test drive and all went well.

(I did notice that there was a lot of oil on the intake pipe from an oil leak I had a while back, and thought it may have got in the hole- however the air filter should have picked this up).

Anyway, this morning when I tried to start the car it was really rough sounding, like the mixture was too rich and when it did eventually start (under full throttle) it misfired from the exhaust and the air intake ends…

…came back this evening and took the air intake pipe off completely thinking perhaps taping it up had blocked the flow of air too much, and then took out the plugs and dried them off. Tried starting it and same as before, it chuggs away like it needs to clear it's throat, misfires and then cuts out. Smoke coming out the back and smell of petrol up front.

Any ideas?  :dontknow:

i ve had very similar problems with my gti recently. found the timing was out which i sorted but still had problems it was revving fine past past 4000 revs but would nt do alot before that. i seemed to have solved the problem this morning seemed to be a combination opf hall sender (replaced from gsf £35 + vat ) and then took off the wur and stripped and cleaned it and it seems fine in fact running better then it ever has :)

hope you get it sorted

I did think about the timing, but how would it suddenly go out of time over night? It was fine on the test drive…

I'll look at top hall sender, what's the WUR?

it probably has nt gone out but the hall sender caused mine to back fire through the intake manifold causing one of the injector seats to blow out. try adjusting the dizzy turn it slightly see if things inmprove.

the wur is down the front of the engine its the warm up regulator a block with an electrical plug and 2 fuel lines i stripped mine and all is good

Tried fiddling with the dizzy- was tight on and didn't seem like it had moved. Took it off and put it back. Made no difference.

I'll look at the hall sender. Where is it?

Are you sure you mean the hall sender? That appears to be on the speedo cluster?

Hi all, got to the bottom of the issue. Number 4 injector was pulled an inch or so out of the head. Enough to cause all of the issues.

Didn't realise how easily they come out when the engine isn't running and sucking them back into place.

Thanks for your advice.
