loud whistle/screaming noise???????????? please help

whats wrong with my car, everythings going at once!!! i'll fix it, then next weeks its summet else!!

was driving to the garage to get my exhaust fitted, when stopped at the traffic lights, i hear this whistle comign from engine, it went after i rev'd the engine, then further down the road, it got to the point where people were tuning round woundering what the heck was making this weird noise…

managed to get home without to many people pointing and laughing..

its an undescribable sound…more of a scream then a whislte, its as if i've got a bunch of baby kittens stuck in between something, the faster you go…the louder the screams.. :dontknow:

think its coming from the inlet mannifold, that area…

Id check the alternator belt first, probably slipping.

or for a small child caught on the front spoiler. Their knees tend to catch on the ground when this happens causing them to make a simialr noise.

You obviously didn't tighten it enough when you did the water pump mate.

you have to slacken off the alternator, i think there are 2 or bolts, one at the base, and one which is attached to an adjuster bar at the top front of the alternator.
 you should be able to move it back and forward.
 to put tension on the belt you have to pull the alternator 2wards you and tighten it up to give about 5 to 10mm free play in the belt at its midpoint between the pullies.
 you may need a long pry bar or screw driver to hold it in place whilst tightening it off though. or if you have a willing glamorous assistant it may be worth getting them to hold it in place!!!
 tighten the top bolt first to stop it from springing back.

In my experience, you will deffinately need one!

Insert it underneath the alternator so that it wedges against the block then pull upwards to tighten the belt…

im sure its not that tho, as the belt is well tight...no slac in it whatsoever...

right then, just re-tightend the belt, was fine for a few minuites then it just started, i had my head under the engine while my mate rev'd it, and its deffo coming from the inltet manifold!!!!???? sounds reallllly crap :lol:

i think it has an air leek, you can tell with differance in noise when you mess about with air pipes, auxiliary air valve? anybody had any problems with these?

When I changed the cambelt, its cover was not fitted properly and made noise - refitting it cured this. I noticed at the last meet that you didn't have the top cover….I suppose its possible that the other covers are rubbing on a pulley.

Aux air valve sounds like a distinct possibility for making a whistling noise. There's quite a number of air and vacuum pipes under the bonnet, it could be any of these making the noise. Do you see any performance drop too? Or a high idle speed (this would suggest a vacuum leak)?

Are you coming to the VW meet this Sunday in Preston Brook? Its one of these things which is easier to look at/listen to, than diagnose over the web.

Has the idle screw come out of the back of the Throttle Body???

no mate everything is still intact, its well weird, paul, i will deffo try and make this sunday coz i know its gonna be something really simple but if i take it to a garage there gonna take the mic, and im skint at the mo :|
