Lack of Power or normal?

Hi

We have a 1993 Golf Cab 1800 gti with a DX engine.

My question is how should the car drive. I have never driven a vw 1800 8 valve so i have nothing to compare it with.

I just get the feeling its not set up correctly as it appears to accelerate ok to 60 (although seems a bit high pitched) but it struggles to get past 85 comfortably ie without putting my foot to the floor and keeping it in. is this normal. It also doesn't feel very 'revvy' again is this normal?

The car starts on the button every time

It ticks over perfectly and never misses abeat when driving.

It does run on 17inch alloys at the moment as one of the original wheels was stolen. Would this make a difference?

A point in the right direction would be appreciated cheers

Marypot

…just a thought…have you got a rotor arm with the rev limiter fitted? They were a constant pain….fit a 'normal' plain arm and see if it makes a difference…

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

hi mary-pot,

i had a similar issue, i couldnt really get past 50 with my foot flat down on the gas.

turned out it was a timing issue - the belt jumped 4 or 5 teeth or so and this was enough to pratically halve the power of the engine. advancing or retarding the distributor didnt make any difference to me.

id suggest doing what prowler says as this is a cheapest option, couple of quid or so and if that doesnt fix it deffitnely take it to a garage to get the timing checked out with an old fashioned timing light or do it yourself if you got the equipment :D
