K n' N Air Filters?

Whats the hype?
Are they worth the money?

Hype, probably created because on some other cars, the original air filter is restrictive. On a Mk1 Golf GTI, the stock air filter isn't a restriction so its not worth the money/trouble to fit an aftermarket one, really. They do have other advantages, namely they can be cleaned and last longer, instead of being disposed/replaced, so over the lifetime of a car it would pay for itself.

Expensive stickers if you ask me because the filters do nothing for power or performance gains! Believe me i have tested plenty on the dyno at work.Example is my friends 16V G60 pulls 290BHP through the stock paper air filter and runs 286BHP through a common well known performance filter (not naming any names)Audi RS4 develops 381BHP through a paper element and with modern vehicles the oil in most performance filters will destroy the Mass Air Flow meter.
For best performance i recommend changing the standard paper element as often as you do the oil and always use genuine parts, there is a difference.

GSF or Euro Car Parts, if you need to order/buy stuff over the internet. I use either of these, for some service items. Having said that, your local FLAPS might be just as good and more convenient for you. I dare say even Halfords will have the correct air filter off the shelf, tho i don't think they'd be that competitive on price.
