k jet gti not starting !!

HI everyone, new to this club and looking for some help please, bought diesel caddy and at same time bought mk2 gti 1.8 8v k jet engine to put in caddy, changed looms where required drained diesel tank fitted lift pump to tank, fitted correct pump & accumulator (one that fits underneath at back), fitted new timing belt, plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm, added coil all wired up okay, set flywheel to 6 degrees btdc, set cams with the dot just on top face of cyl/head and have rotor arm pointing to the mark on dizzy, which at present is pointing in the direction of 10 o'clock?? one bloke that sells vw parts told me mark on dizzy should point towards 10 o'clock?? a vw garage told me to have it point towards 2 o'clock?? tried both, wont start, :dontknow:  any ideas folks ??? this pickup has become my latest headache since the kids left home!!! come back kids, all is forgiven!  :banghead:

When number one piston is at the top (take the spark plug out and use a long screw driver to detect it) and on the firing stroke ( take the rocker cover off and you should see both number 1 valves closed, if not then rotate the engine through 180 degrees).

So you have the engine in the position where number 1 cylinder is about to fire. At this point the rotor arm should point to the lead on the dissy that goes to the number one spark plug, sometimes this coincides with the line on the edge of the dissy, but do not rely on it. Once running get a strobe on the engine to finely set the timing.

Cheers,
Ade

Mine is roughly at 10 o'clock so that sounds okay. The centre of the rotor arm should line up with the mark and most importantly as lhasadreams said, the lead going to No1 should line up aswell. It doesn't need to be far out for the car not to start, I've discovered this by experience and wasted the best part of a weekend on it. I've just read your original post again and you say you lined up the flywheel with the 6 degrees BTDC mark, it should be set to TDC when you position the cam wheel and line up the rotor arm with the mark on the distributor.
