Jerky anyone???

Hi there i'm new to this forum..and also new to the watercooled scene having worked mostly with Bugs n Ghias..

I've jst purchased a Mk1 GTi 1.8..all seemed fine when i bought it, i looked it over, test drove it..all was excellent…then i was driving home..from bournemouth to london when i felt the car surge/jerk…i was doing about 65 (there was traffic)..as i drove on it got worse..it started happenin through all the gears…

It accelerates then jerks, carries on, then same happens all way through the gears..only seems to happen when the car is warm tho.. No noises, no crunching!

any ideas? have i bought a dud?? help  :?

You are going to have to go through the normal checks but sounds ignition related to me. I had a similar problem with a coil breaking down though.

have you checked all the connections are good ?  ignition switch ok ? rusty filler neck ?  fuel filter ? don't give  up hope on the car yet . there is always an answer, just have to find the question, good luck and get a haynes manual.

Mk1 2l TSR G60.  .getting. There twice as fast

Mk1 lhd diesel…….getting. There for half the cost

I had a similar problem on long runs and when the car had been running a while.
Replaced the HT leads this weekend and it runs like a dream, accelerates faster too. I've replaced the spark plugs and dizy cap over the last couple of weeks aswell but for me the leads really made the difference.
Another forum said something about the heat increasing the resistance in the cable and that's why it runs badly when motorway hot.

Taken the car back to him to have a look see again…

Is the fuel pump a Pos?? Its extremely noisey??? more so than i'd expected???

Could be the pump - if it is not touching the body and is still very noisy it is likly that it is the culprit

End of the road

Thanks guys for all your help, but i don't have to worry abouth the prob anymore..

I have been away over the weekend..

The car was parked outside my house and some nutter decided to race up my street and totally smack the driverside front end…and drive off without so much of a care in the world… Oh and the back is F**ked too coz there was a car behind parked me… no-one saw or heard it.. :dontknow:

Only had the car 3 weeks if that?!

Well if anyone needs any spares for a Mk1 1.8 GTi with 5 Pirreli P-Slots
,let me know..
In the mean time i'm gonna go cry..
