Issue starting my new (to me) 82 gti

So I picked up my first mk1 gti on Thursday and was having an absolute blast in it, all has been fine until today when it simply refuses to start - I was fiddling with the wiring this morning trying to get a period radio I sourced wired up and I blew the fuse (number 3) - I replaced the fuse and tried to start the car but all it does is turn over - Doesn't even seem to try and start - Have had no problems starting it from cold since Thursday and this just seems a little odd - A mechanic mate of mine's diagnosis was that i'd flattened the battery by messing with the stereo all morning, then flooded the engine… He reckons if I charge the battery over night and leave the car it should be fine tommorow morning - I'm not too sure myself. Another symptom I get is that when I turn the ignition I get two short low pitched buzzes from somewhere in the left of the engine bay.

It could be that my fiddling with the stereo has nothing at all to do with it, but it seems odd that it's been starting fine ever since I got it and now it won't…

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Andy

the 2 short buzzes are you fuel pump priming mate, its under the car just infront of the rear wheel - quite normal

is it turning over at the right speed or is it turning slowly? fuse 3 only has the radio, clock and fag lighter on it so shouldnt stop the car running

Cheers Ross, good to hear the buzzing noise is normal - Seems to be turning over at the correct speed... Could my mechanic mate be right?

Actually started today after having the spark plugs out overnight and recharging the battery - Is still very temperamental however, it was starting up on the button prior to yesterday, now it takes some turning over and struggles a little.
