injection pump

my pump has just failed, it was running fine at idle on the drive whilst i was cleaning up a few bits and the car stalled and wouldn't start up again, tried another fuel pump and it works again.
Strange thing is this is not the first time this is the 2nd pump to fail this way and i wonder how long the 3rd will last?
Any ideas what could cause this?

Sometimes its the terminals that stop the pump from working properly or dirt in the pump. I have only just renewed the pump after 5 years! I got the Bosah and have never looked back (forgive my spelling it's an absolute disgrace, thick and all that!)

the 2nd one only lasted 6 miles 8O  but i think i have found the problem to be that the fuel pump only works when the points are open this proberly means that the pump is pulsing and therefore getting hot and failing quickly,
i'm going to by pass the lot and put a switch in a ignition live and a feed to the pump and see what happens a cant really afford to destroy another pump.
also an inline filter before the pump should stop any crap getting in the pump just in case.

When I got my car the pump ran fine, after removing it and storing it for a few months whilst restoring other stuff it wouldn?t work when reinstalled. Turned out to be the relay.

Then the pump died (it looked a relatively new replacement itself) and then a second brand new one did the same.  :x I had had the tank off and swilled out as much debris as possible during the rebuild but there was still some crud in there. Sooooo?. before fitting the 3rd replacement I lashed up a large inline filter in-between the tank and pump. This summer I removed the filter and replaced it with the original rubber pipe as I couldn?t find another similar filter. I guess after 15000 miles it had filtered out all the crud anyway.

Selotape a magnic to a cane, remove the fuel sender (I think it is 3 philips screws) and push the cane down through the hole, the magnic mops up all the crap in the tank

This will work for the odd bit of rusty old filler pipe that?s in the tank but mine was full of non magnetic road debris inc bits of red brick etc. Also not sure how long sellotape will last in petrol. :?:  Unless you are very lucky and catch it just after the filler pipe is holed the only way to sort it to remove and clean tank and replace the filler and also replace or blow out the fuel lines.
