Ignition / Staring problem

Hi all, new to this forum.
Recently purchased a car that I had been wanting for a long long time, unfortunatley cash was tight so wanted a cheap one to do up.  The car in question is a MK1 Golf GTI 1.8 1983.  Got it for ?325!!!! The car itself is not in that bad nick.  Cosmetically it is fine apart from the front where the towing eye had been ripped out and bent the front crossmember?? in the process. When I bought it about a week ago the car was running!

Now to my problem…….  The car won't start.
At first I thought it was the coil as I wasn't getting any spark at the plugs when I turned it over.  Bought one second hand so this could still be the problem.  I noticed that if I turn the ignition on and connect a spark plug dircetly to the main output from the coil then connect the power lead to the coil i will get a spark however it will not spark if I try turn the ignition (connected the same)….so I think it might be the ignition control module…does this sound right to any of you?

Changed the Dizzy cap and HT leads but no effect.

I will prob buy a new control module in a couple of days but does anyone else have any ideas?

Cheers

Ignition Starting problems solved.

Hi again, quick update: Car now starting n running sweet!

For those who are interested I found that the connection to the Dizzy was a bit corroded, cleaned the terminals and this sorted the problem.
