idling problem -engine stalls

sympton -gti engine idles erratically /stalls unless revs kept above 2500.
when at this level and below -here a cracking nose in the injection/air intake-sounds like the buttefly valves are being wipped back and forwards!
i guess this is misfiring but not sure?found that the bolts holding the aluminium intake housing were lose so i guess allowing air in, tightened these but tha problem seems worse!
anyone any ideas?

Checklist…

Timing
Fueling
Aux Air Valve
Warm Up Regulator

Have you got a copy of the Haynes manual? It has good tests for some of the above…

will have a look at these - i suspect fuel starvation -started to strip down but joints on fuel acc. all rusted up - dont fancy ,messing too much with all that fuel around!,timing ok.
will check the 2 injection components. yes have a well used ,oily copy!
do you think the gasget on the al. housing may have beeen damaged when the bolts were lose-could this cause the symptons if air is getting in?

sounds like fuel starvation. mine done the same after fitting a piperx lower airbox. turned the co up and runs nice and smooth now. still think fuel pressure is not right mind.

What condition is the fuel filler neck in? Any rubbish in the tank? If you can take the rear bench out you can unscrew the cover and shine a torch in to see…

Have you replaced the fuel filter recently? Some fuel pumps have a small mesh located at the pump inlet. If there is any rubbish in the tank then this could be blocked.

the neck was replaced a while ago after caving in with rust. so there is prpbebly a loud of s in the tank. however i bled some petrol from the tank today and it flowed freely. had the pump off -didnt see an filter!but diddnt look inside. i have suspected the fuel acc. all along as the fuel passese tho here to the filter/engine.-but had another thought -an intermittent hall sender unit in the dizzy!

Check the tank. If there is rust in there then that needs to be removed 1st as anything else you do will just get clogged up again. Lines should be blown clear and filter should be changed. Once done all that if problem still persists then move on to accumulator and pump etc.

Have a search for Prowlers Injector Test and see if the flow rate is up to spec also.

the problem was the loose housing bolts and a blown housing gasket causing an air leak.needed to take head off to access ,but now all refitted and bolts to correct torque.
thanks to all who advised!
