Idling issues
Hi, hopefully someone may be able to help me. I am restoring a 1984 MK1 GTi. The problem I am hunting down at the moment is a serious problem with idling. It starts very well, within a second or two, but the idling is way low. The engine does have a pretty hot cam in, I am not sure exactly what it is so the idling will be a bit lumpy, but I cannot get it higher than about 600 rpm. This means that its quite prone to dying on me.
I have swapped over the aux air valve from my other GTi, as well as all the vacuum hoses and one way valves but it made no difference. The Aux air valve does receive 12v as long as the fuel pump runs, and the cold start valve tests o.k. I have also sprayed with carb cleaner all over the inlet manifold and induction system, but cannot notice any increase in idling. At the moment the idling screw is all the way out, and the idling should be way high. Is there something that I am missing??
Any help would be great… Thanks

Managed to get the idling up…. Adjusted the timing. I should have done it at first, but the motor was just built and fitted, and I trusted the work done. Advance timing light is out of commission as it fell off the workbench a while ago so I just advanced the timing a little without it, but the revs picked up immediately. I will try and get a new one somewhere in the week and sort it out properly. I also believe that the co's are way out, but that will have to wait until I get the car back on the road.

You need to adjust things in this order:
1. Timing
2. Mixture
3. Idle speed
because the first 2 affect the idle speed! Needless to say, to adjust them within spec, you need to be able to measure them accurately.
