how to identify a 1.6 or a 1.8 engine ?

greetings from malaysia , i just bought golf mk1 4 door and the previous owner had converted the engine to a 1.6 auto , but when i brought the car to a vw specialist the mechanic told me its a 1.8 engine , my question is , how do i check whether its a 1.6 or a 1.8 engine and where is the engine number located at ?.

the 1.8 head take off for the coolant is between pistons 3 and 4 where as on the 1.6 it is between 1 and 2 iirc… or something like that the 1.8s is further across, (no doubt i will now be proved wrong   )

Hi Vestex. Engine number should be stamped on block just above the fuel pump / distributor area. Two letters give the game away. 1.6 …EW, HN, EM,FR, EG.  1.8 DX, JJ, JH, GH, EX.  This may not be complet list but hope it helps.

You are correct . Another common 1.8 is the mk2 GTI engine, which is EV.

Another clue is the rear exhaust box, the 1600 is round and the 1800 is oval.

so im assuming from this picture its a 1.8 engine ? the engine code is RV , and how would i know if its from a 1.8 gti or not ? currently this car has an auto box .

'RV' is a  1.8 digifant engine producing 105bhp  Would have been fitted to golf/jetta.  Mainly for US market.
