1600s (up to 1981 model year) used an EG engine code. 1800s (1982-1984) used DX.
Don't pay too much attention to the 1.6 or 1.8 stamp on the block, it doesn't directly relate to the actual capacity of the engine in the first place; and also other (non-GTI) engines will have the stamp too.

1988?????? They stopped making the hatchbacks in 1984. If its a cabby, then everything went muddled after about 1986 anyway. After then, the clipper replaced the GL and the GTI got the clipper kit, so they become somewhat indistinct except for the engine. Then later on they started messing around with detuned cat versions, digifant, and injection engines in clippers.

You have a choice of JH or DX engine code if it was a GTI. Lower models (Clipper and I think they still did GL too) had EW if it was a 1.6; and EX if it was a 1.8. The obvious giveaway here is it will have a carb, instead of fuel injection. There was also KT engine code which was for Switzerland and Swedish market (extra emissions requirements) apparently.
I think (but not sure) the JH is a detuned, emissions compliant version of the 1.8 K-Jet, with a cat and some electronics, but I can't be sure because I've not seen a Mk1 with one in it in the UK.

EG engine code was from 1976-1981, so I reckon someone's swapped out the proper engine and fitted that one, downgrading it from a 1.8 to a 1.6.

oh right okay… il double check the plate again tomorrow but im pretty sure it was EG, if they have downgraded is that neccesarily a bad thing? i.e so its not a gti engine if its not JH OR DX

Have you just bought the car? Who from? Did they advertise it as a 1.8? Because I reckon you're owed 200cc or so.

Its a GTI engine in the sense that its an engine that was once in a GTI (or GLI, but that's for another day….) but its not the right one for a 1988 car.

yeah i bought it today for £300 it was advertised as a 1.8 4 speed manual…. :dontknow: though proly a typo,
its a good price no rust and the hood is good however quite stiff to put up and down, + its got an mot, havnt got the engine going though will try an look properly tomorrow, the distributor is out, i need to time it up and stick it back in, the wiring for it is a mess the contacts on the dizzy are missing and the wiring for it has bullet plugs connected… i know theres meant to be a normal plug that connects it im not sure what po has done there,
the fusebox is also hanging in footwell wiring hacked with t-taps, bonnet release catch in footwell broken, thought i was just being stupid trying to figure out how the boot opens but think someone has flushed the boot and removed the lock, wiring for a popper but no switch in sight, couple of split wires in footwell also…
