Hose mystery

Don't know where hoses should go

I just bought my first Volkswagen. It is a 1985 Cabriolet wit a 1.8 engine. The car runs great, but the engine compartment is a mess. Over the years thing have been bypassed, removed, re-wired, etc….I want to clean this up! The trouble is I've never owned anything but Fords before this car, so I don't know anything about this car!

I have a couple simple questions to get started that anyone that has seen one of these engines can answer for me. Any help is appreciated. I can't find a clear view in my Hayne's manual.

There is a metal tube on the exhaust manifold that used to have a hose on it. What is that supposed to connect to and what type of hose should be there? I have a plastic accordion hose coming out of a small box behind the front bumper. What is that supposed to connect to? I have an open hole on the bottom of my air filter box. There is a screw that held something to it. What is supposed to connect to that hole and how is it supposed to connect to the box?

Is the engine fuel injection or a carb?

if it is a fuel injected engine, then the accordion hose is the air intake. It should connect to the bottom of the air filter box - there is a spigot for it, and there is a metal band clamp to hold it in place.

are you sure the metal pipe is coming from the exhaust manifold? if it is from the back of the inlet manifold (above the exhaust manifold), then it is probably the vacuum pipe that goes to the distributor vacuum advance. A short piece of this https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/N0202811/fuel-breather-hose-per-metre-7mm-3mm-wall-cotton-braided/ connects to a thin plastic vacuum hose, that runs down to the distributor.

Hope this helps

It is fuel injected.

LeeO, you can see from this picture that the hose won't fit on the air intake box. There is a screw there though. Is there a part missing?

193 views (209 Kb) Here is the tube that seems to be attached to the exhaust manifold. You can feel air coming out of it when the engine is running. It is about 1.75 inches (45mm) in diameter. It is located directly under the throttle body.

The end of the accordion hose goes over the outside of the spigot under the air filter box, and the metal band clamp is tightened round it to hold it in place.

The outlet you show on the manifold isn't the same as on mine, so I cannot help. sorry. It isn't the one I was thinking of.

The accordion hose is smaller than the spigot on the air intake and I can barely stretch it far enough to reach the box. There has to be a missing adapter or something??

Yours looks the same as mine - I can't see anything missing. my hose is stretched out a fair bit.

The accordion hose actually fits inside the tube coming from the air intake. Even with the hose clamp on it. Could you send a picture of yours? Thanks for your help Lee!

Sorry for delay in replying. I haven't got a photo for you, but I have checked and on mine the hose goes over the spigot. On your photo it looks like some wires or pipes are affecting the routing of the accordion hose? Perhaps a bit of rerouting will give you some slack in the hose? I know it sounds obvious (sorry) but have you loosened off the metal band clamp in case it is constricting the end of the hose?
