high idle speed?!?!?!?!?

Hi there you all well i have got my golf on the road and it was running fine, when starting it, it would rev up to 2000rpm then after heating up drop to 1000rpm, where as now when started rev's to almost 3000rpm and then drops to 2000rpm, any ideas why its doing this, is there some sort of engine idle sensor that i can check??? any help will be very helpfull. Thanks.

You can adjust the idle speed with a 7mm socket or small spanner just inside your bulkhead at the rear of where your accelerator cable connects.
Basically right in the middle of the bay but at right the back of your engine.

That is what I done on my GTI and adjusted it to idle at around 900.

Someone with more technical knowledge might explain better or tell you it is something else but I tried  :dontknow:

Cheers Chris

Well ive already done that and there is no more ajustment left, there is a new air auxillary valve and distributor already fitted, ive had a quick look at all of the vacuum hose's and thay all look good so im thinking that maybe it could be the cold injection system on the side of the inlet manifold. Is there any one else that could help PLEEEEAAAASSSSSEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

There is a coarse adjustment on the throttle butterfly - worth a try.

well the thing is that its not always been idling at 2000rpm it was idling  at 1000rpm thats what has made me think that its not just a case of ajusting it and that maybe some thing has happened.

What does it do most of the time?

Is there any pattern - when is it 2000 and when is it 1000?

Well when i first got it (2 weeks ago), it would when first started up from cold it would rev up to 2000rpm then when heated up drop slowly back down to 1000rpm but now when i start it up it revs to almost 3000rpm than slowly falls to 2000rpm.

Yep, sounds like you need to adjust the coarse idle speed (then fine tune it with the 7mm screw).

It should be very easy to suss out how it works, by looking at the throttle body. You undo the nut, adjust the screw in or out and tighten the nut again to lock it.

well ive already done that and there is not any more ajustment in it!!

In your post above, you said you'd already adjusted the normal idle screw. I've mentioned the coarse adjustment. Have you now adjusted both?

hey buzz '83, my cabbie is doing the same thing, high idle till she warms up, ive been told it might just be a sticky startup valve(?) and just need greasing? not sure on the jump in revs though

Thanks all for all of the help you have given me, I have found out what was wrong with my golf, it was the idle mixture screw had started to wind its self out with the engine vibes so it was running super lean on idle, hence hi revs, so a quick adjustment and a small blob of blue locktite and shes a good one :D and all done on the side of the road on my way upto Bristol, thank god I carry tools in my car LOL
