im looking at the golf at the moment does anyone have any idea where and how much a engine and gearbox rebuilds can be done?

Not trying to put you off and yes there are cheaper places but thats the avarage retail price .

Last time I checked Big Boys Toys simply used www.volkspares.co.uk engines and charged a bit extra. Not convinced by Volkspares and the quality of their reconditioning. Wasn't to impressed with a recon gearbox I picked a couple of years ago. Had a bit of crunch on 2nd gear syncro, which they wouldn't except and tried to cure by replacing linkages - complete muppets, gave up on them. Also heard lots of horror stories about endless problems with recon engines and more dreadful customer service.

Bear in mind recon engines have been checked and only bits that show obvious signs of wear replaced. You could be paying big bucks for what is simply a ?50-100 cleaned up 2nd hand engine.

www.vegeuk.com are supposed to remanufacture to Oem standards and be better better quliaty (hence the higher price). You could also look at getting your current engine rebuilt by a respected engine overhauler.
