Help!

Seeing earlier post about cambelt faliure got me worried so thought i'd better do mine, taken the 4 allen bolts and the big centre bolt out of the crankshaft pulley but it still does'nt want to come off - any tricks of the trade to getting it off. Not even attempted the water pump pulley as that one spins around so easy when i try and undo the allen bolts i can see a problem looming with that 1 as well.  :dontknow:

errr..... no need to remove the centre bolt, infact quite surprised you got it undone!

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

It was'nt easy! - 'cause it did'nt come off after i removed the 4 bolts i thought it must be held on by something else (it's a 82 1600 ) i must admit i thought it was a crap design to it secured by 4 hex bolts and 1 great big thing in the middle. Ive marked  up the pulley so i can put it back the same way - if i ever get it off.

They can be a bit sticky so gentle levering should get it off. Failing that, a pulley puller would do it easy.

Woh there, am I missing something. You don't need to take off any pulleys to do a cam belt change 8O . If you haven't got a Haynes, than get one and read the relevant bits. Basically you need to slacken of the tensioner a bit, remove old belt, fit new belt and re-tension.

Don't you have to take off the pulleys in order to get the bottom plastic belt cover off? - the crankshaft pulley blocks the final screw to get the cover off. I suppose if you're a bit nifty you could maybe manage to poke it down there, but i'm not that patient, or experianced. (It would save a lot of hassle though). On the French 'passion golf' site they've got some great pics of someone doing it - but god knows what they're saying in the instructions.

I thought you could get the lower cover off without removing the pulley. Could well be that someone never refitted the obscured screw on mine for that reason :dontknow: . The French site is great - just copy the url into Google language tools and off you go - albeit a bit broken english… click here

Thanks for the translation tip, now if only they had a 'how to' for replacing your valves. :)

In short you need to take the cylinder head off, remove camshaft and sprocket then use a spring compressor to dissemble the springs and valves. You should check the valves and springs (Haynes explains how and the tolerances). You need to grind-in the new valves (and regrind the old) using grinding paste and stick and clean head and block faces. Then reasemble with new gaskets, oil seals, cambelt and head bolts all of which are quite cheap.

The Haynes isn't bad in explaining the process and detailing tolerances - first chapter, sections on cylinder head removal and refitting. Even if you have to buy most of the tools and parts for the job would still be cheaper than a garage would charge.
