yea i took some1s recommendation to use full synth in my 8v carb, ended up killin the car on the severn bridge, and after a year long garaged car have just done an engine replacement. these oils are too thin for the old engines and gsf said whoever reccomended me that was a doughnut.

iv used 10w 40 semi-synth with no problems at all!

I use 10/40 synthetic…

Synthetic will kill the gearbox but not the engine.

Modern synthetic oils do a good job of cleaning as they go and they lubricate the same as semi or non.

There aren't lots of plastic bushes in the 8v or small block and those are often what causes problems with fully synth, hence the second gear syncro dying on small block boxes if you use GL5 oil!!!

Get with the times. if oils killed engines they would sell them.

Vw specified it as at the time, fully synth was very expensive and in it's infancy.

Modern oils don't eat o-rings.

Chris, out of interest what died? big end shells? piston rings?

Most of the reasons engines die is the previous owners lack of maintenance. My old formel e motor did 136k on the original headgasket and i only took it out as i had stuck rings. a problem i could have solved with a good engine flush if i'd known that was all it was…

Jon,

Yea the car died on the motorway, complete loss of power. Hard shoulder, and a call to the rac man tellin me bottom end had gone. There was a nasty knock, and a complete drop of a cylinder…

Only just dropped a new engine in, haven't had chance to have a good look inside the old one yet. Wanna have it apart just so I can find out exactly wot went wrong.

5w 40 full synth seemed too thin for the old engine in mine and a couple of peoples hindsight, might b wrong, but hey, lifes a learning curve!

yup 5/40 is way to thin. 10 or 15/40!!!!

Synthetic or semi 5/40 would not be good!!!
