Help required in fitting new engine

Hi,
I recently bought from the local auction a Mk1 Golf Gti cabriolet on an F reg '88 for a project. On inspection it was clear to see that the engine within the car was not a 1.8 injection but a 1.8 piersberg carb. The chassis number, log book and further checks confirm that the car should be a 1.8 Gti.

The car runs but it is not smooth and idles erraticqally and cuts out on occasions. I am considering replacing the carb engine with an injection engine to make the car as it should be.  I have contacted the previous owner to find out if they can shed any light on the change but to date have received no reply.

I have picked up a complete engine and gearbox with all auxcillaries of ebay which I hope to use all being well. This engine is from a 1990 1.8 gti which i was told was a Digifant injection.

I dont have any form of ecu unit to control the injection system with the engine I have bought and I cant seem to find anything in place within the the engine bay of the car either.

Any advice in regards changing the engine or words of wisdom on my situation would be appreciated.

many thanks
Chris

Unless you got it cheap sell it on and buy a GTi. Otherwise you are going to need all the GTi parts inc the Digifant ECU, fuel pump, high pressure lines, accumulator, etc. You might spend ages debodging it.

Further to my last

Hi the car only cost me £250 and came with 7mths mot and is in generally good condition so was hoping to keep hold of it.

It was orginally a gti and for some unkown reason it has been converted to the carb.

Since posting my last question I have made two discoveries. First being a small black box under the scuttle panel on the passenger side of my car which im guessing is the control unit. Secondly I have come across a K-jetronic engine and gearbox complete with air flow meter box and hoses/metal pipes.

The ad is local and also states that the vehicle is being broken and other parts available.

Would this K-jetronic engine be a better option than the Digifant one I have and if so what other parts is it worth having to complete the engine job?

Any replies would be appreciated. Cheers

If it was definitely a 1988 GTI, then it will have been K-Jet, not Digifant. How much of the K-Jet stuff remains - electric fuel pump, accumulator, fuel pump relay, fuel lines with the correct ends, mounts for K-Jet airbox (near battery), etc? (You'll have to get under the car to check most of those).

If most of the stuff is there, then buying and transferring a K-Jet motor into it shouldn't be too hard. If some items are missing, then you'll need to budget for that, a good place is the classifieds here for bits & bobs. I'm sure funkstar can help you out with parts.

If you wanted a short term solution to your rough idling you could put a weber card on which are more reliable than the pierberg apparently.

However your probably doing exactly what I would do and go down the mechanical fuel injection route!

I had someone fit a K jet injection engine in to my clipper cab (was a carb engine), but that developed a knocking noise and fairly terminal oil leak. So Ive taken that out and am in the middle of a 20vt engine swap.

So if you need any parts off the engine let me know, I've also got a K&N panel filter that was freeshly washed and oiled just before I took the engine out if your interested?
