Help please!! bad running

Someone help!!
Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
I've been playing around with my golf for months and although running a little better still seems to be misfiring/running rough. I need to get this MOT'ed and on the road by next month as my storage place is getting sold.  8O

what I've done:

Fuel injector test

Fuel distribution was identical for all.
Spray pattern seemed good.

Valve clearance
Checked and seemed to be in spec.

Compression test
Compression test, engine was warm but not hot (on for around 3 minutes), as I have problems with my rocker cover leaking oil and causing smoke from the manifold. Solving this weekend hopefully.

Cylinder…………. PSI……..Bar
1 ………………….190……..13.5
2…………………..185……..13
3…………………..185……..13
4…………………..180……..12.5

Ignition Timing
Was off slightly, but now adjusted. although was not fully warm so will repeat when i can get it up to temp

Fuel pressure
Initially

Primed - 1.55Bar
System - 5.7Bar

2 washers removed  as was high (from relief valve)

New System Pressure - 5.28 Bar
System pressure still seems a little high considering there is now no washers?

Warm up valve pressures

00.00- 1.50
00.30 - 1.7
00.50 - 2.43
01.10 - 2.9
01.30 - 3.17
01.50 - 3.46
02.10 - 3.67
02.30 - 3.76
No further increase

Changed

HT leads were changed (there was no continuity)
Spark plugs,
Dizy cap, and rotor arm.

Mixture
Played with the mixture today and couldn't seem to find any sweat spot, ran badly from rich to poor.

All I can thing is left to check

-   Check Engine timing
-   Replace Fuel meter? (expensive)
-   Replace Ignition coil

Does anyone have any other suggestions, or can comment on whether these things are worth checking can cam timing cause rouge running or just loss in power?
Does anyone have any spare parts I can buy/borrow to try?

Any help really appreciated.

You need to get the mixture measured properly, if possible with a lambda probe (but its awkward to get an accurate measurement at idle) but if not, then with a CO meter. Beware, the 'home' ones are very slow and inaccurate, and that if too lean, won't give a correlating result.

Yes, cam timing can cause rough running.

Thanks for the reply paul_c

i know this has to be done properly and i will get it analysed/adjusted when i send it for its MOT, but considering it ran rough in all positions i'm thinking it cant just be a mixture issue?

i dose smell a bit rich and there's water coming out of the exhaust, but as you say its hard to know without a proper analyser.

perhaps i will have to take a look at timing in that case, was trying to resist that. the previous owner got the engine swaped an it never quite run properly apparently.

i will try and load a video of it running shortly.
