Help!!! Mk1 1.6 engine to mk2 1.8 conversion

I need to know if I can use a (MK1) distributor in the new (MK2) 1990 digifant engine / block and head assembly?has anyone done this conversion??
 I'm not convinced that my MK1 ecu is 'seeing' the timing as the MK2 as it uses a crank censor and the MK1 doesn't. The battery went flat trying to start it, and it was nearly going, so I'm hoping it was only battery / power, but if anyone out there who has completed this conversion please contact me on markpats@myway.com to help me sort this headache out that would be great.
