i'd at least give it a service first. fuel will be useless by now. drain the tank and put some fresh stuff in.

ive done all that and flushed the tank last week.

put new spark plugs, lead, dizzy cap , rota arm and put petrol in.

but it still doesnt want to start. ive ordered a new coil which is coming on mon to see if that helps as it doesnt look in condition.

if theres a spark it is'nt the coil. check the timing.

checked the timing today and it is spot on, i think its down to a fuel problem, maybe need a new pump

can you see fuel passing though the inline filter? or whip the air box off and look down the carb to see if fuel is getting in.

Mine had stood for the same amount of time, and it turned out to be a duff fuel pump, and then a blockage in the fuel lines.

Can you hear the fuel pump spin, either with the key turned to the first position, or when you turn the engine over? Is there voltage to it? If the answer to these is yes, then it's most likely to be a blockage in the system.

To fault find, I bridged the connections on the fusebox with a switch so I could turn the pump on and off without the engine turning over, then started at the front of the system (injectors), and unscrewed each component, working my way back to the tank. Each time I removed a component I switched the pump on and examined the fuel flow. Eventually I found the blockage was in the tank itself.

my 1.6gti sat for a bit and wouldn't start,  like mcscrew said listen for the fuel pump priming up or better still disconnect the fuel line before the fuel filter (put a container underneath first)have an assistant help turn her over and see if fuel is getting through. if not first port of call is fuel pump relay. check this as i think its quite a common fault. it got a 15amp fuse in it i think, check the fuse first if its ok could be the workings inside have corroded. gsf do brand new relays for less than ?20. i'd check this first before getting a new pump, depends on your budget.. good luck
