Help! - Engine rebuild - Where does this go?

My 1992 Mk1 GTi Cabriolet has had a head skim & overhaul, but I've ended up with a temp sensor or something similar which I can't find a home for… I'd written on it "rocker cover" but cant see it on the "before" pictures! Can anyone have a look under their bonnet and tell me where it goes?…

This is it…

and this is the location of where abouts it seems to go to. Note the other thing on the corner of the rocker cover which i wasn't sure where to attach, so maybe I got that bit wrong too?

Hi, has noone got any ideas about where this might mount? I'm at a complete standstill without knowing where this goe's and I know I shouldn'tve been such an idiot and taken a picture of that area before I took it apart!!
It's annoying as i'm right at the point where I'm ready to fire it up, we've set the timing, put new plugs in & painted, cleaned & renewed every little bit possible along the way! (I've annoyed my mate who I paid to do the bulk of the work (as I do computers, not cars!) by stopping every 2 minutes to say "what does that part do, wait while I clean it\put insulation tape round the wires\paint it!")…
I also asked him about advancing\retarding the timing and if it would give us any gains as I've heard something about this over the years, but he said I would be best asking an expert on these cars, I'll search the forums for this, but if anyone has a quick answer, then it would be much apprieciated :)

But primarily I need to know if anyone can shed any light on the location of the pictured piece of angled metal which has some kind of sensor attached to it???? PLEASE HELP!!!!

Cheers,
Chris.

Is it digifant or K-Jet?

I have a suspicion its a cylinder head temperature sensor, it bolts to the corner of the rocker cover and the sensor contacts the head. The pic is blurred, this is why nobody has been able to identify it properly.

thanks for the reply mate, i know the piccy is crap :-S
on the last pic, you can see that there is something else bolted to the corner of the rocker cover, which is definately there on the pic i did take pre-op, and I've seen it on other piccies I've trawled thru over the last few days.
Does it bolt on round the back?
edit - how do I tell if it's kjet or digifant?

Is it FI or carb? And if FI, which type?

It's Fuel injection.
It's a 1.8 GTi 8v
1992 K reg - so it has a CAT
I think it's got an ECU - in the scuttle panel near the wipers it looks like an ecu!
It's got a coil, dizzy cap & leads.
Is that enough to tell? I've probably got a pic of the full engine bay if you need?
Cheers,
Chris.

its got digifant injection so that little sensor is a knock sensor, it bolts to the rocker cover and detects if there is any pinking. if it detects it it retards the timing to stop the pinking. ive seen these bolted to one of the rocker cover bolts.

1. Look at the fuel distributor, if it has fuel pipes leading to each injector, its a K-Jet. If its flat, and has a fuel rail with an electrical connection, its Digifant
2. Look in your V5 and give us the engine number

Excellent, thanks for that. I'll remember that I have a Digifant in future  :D
Looking at the back of the metal bracket, it does seem to have an imprint of the metal bars which go on top of the rocker cover bolts and run down the front and back… BUT… there is already a bracket mounted in the back corner which looks as if it should go there, and this "knock sensor" doesn't seem to have a long enough wire to reach to any of the other rocker cover bolts… I will attempt to re-arrange them….

On another note though, I got the timing belt on and it now seems to be correct, with each of the TDC markings on the cam & crank lining up after turning the engine over, BUT (another one!) when you start the engine it seems to do a single rotation and then stall's, almost as if there is no power\fuel etc.
If you keep the throttle pressed it will run, but just wont tick over. Could this be the ecu? or distributor? - we had to check the rotor arm position and move the HT leads from the postition they were in prior to dissasembling the engine in order to get the firing order correct. (1,3,4,2).
I'm certain the arm moved when my mechanic was messing with the cam belt trying to get the cover off, so wondered if this may have thrown the arm out of it's correct position? does it matter? could it cause my stalling problems?

Many Thanks,
Chris.

Hiya,
Anyone got any ideas about this one? I've now swapped the timing belt for a new one & put the rotor arm and plug leads back in their original postions, but it just wont tick over. Whilst revving it though the engine sounds sweet!! So it's really weird that it wont idle… I've even got someone who is into his VW's to have a look and he seems stumped.
Any help\advise would be gratefully recieved :-)
