help, 1.8 cab overheating!

hi got a few probs with my 1.8 cab. starts fine but when ticking over it will cut out after a few mins (less if recently been driven).  also does this when city centre driving. fan seems to be kicking in tho as can here it plus when i walk away from veh it stays on sometimes. dont kno if its related but in any gear when i hit around 4500/5000rpm engine splutters and backfires.  some of the engine hoses look freyed and was wondering if this could be to do with this?  any help would be greatly received as im a new mk1 owner want it as a daily to my beetle and just wanna get on the open road and enjoy it!  HELP ME PLEASE!!!!! :dontknow:

So it cuts out when it runs to temperature or sooner if already warm. Also if you're in traffic it cuts out. Also spluttering and backfiring at high rpm.

Are you saying the car runs on when you walk away?

Which hoses look frayed?

Three things spring to mind:

1. Wiring fault (as it gets hot goes high resistance). This is third on my list of likely problems but you never know

2. Do a compresion test, it'll cost you ?15 for the kit and will tell you an awful lot. This will show up head gasket problems and poor compression

3. My third and final answer would be your a/f mix being way out, might be worth checking that whiley ou're there

need more info!!

sounds like fans workin ok.

splutterin at higher revs is thebiggest indicator but more info required for sure.

fuel pressure test i reckon.
