Head gaskit, need a part no please

hi i'm in the middle of changing the head gaskit on my 1.6 gti. I bought the kit from gsf they only sell 1 for 1.6 gti's, all the oil seals and stuff fit but the head gaskit is wrong and gsf dont sell any others.

my cars is 1979 its got a eg engine code, I went to the vw main dealer and they gave me a part no 02619802A but they had no idea what I was going on about and I thought i'd check see if anyone here knows any better.  

 Anyone had this before?

The part number you quote is incomplete - do you mean 026 198 025 A?
If so this is a rocker cover gasket, not a head gasket - cylinder head gasket for yours is 049 103 383 K.

I've used a GSF rocker cover gasket on my 81 1.6 EG engine no problems. Why would it not fit yours? Checked the VW parts list and for a 79 1.6 GTI it states the original rocker cover gasket is discontinued and to use 026 198 025A - which is a 81 1.6 GTI rocker gasket.

cheers mate you've saved me ordering the wrong part from vw and they wanted me to pay up front.

its just a little different than the one gsf sell, the little water or oil wells or whatever they are dont all line up

just got off the phone to gsf and 049103383 k wouldnt go in to the computer?

sometimes wish i never bought this car nothing has been easy

The GSF number listed is 11481, is that what you have on the receipt?

hi ive got the receipt for the refund and its 11481. looking at the history the car had a exchange engine in 1998(cost them ?500) at 157k maybe the engine no on the reg doccument not the same as in the car, i'll have a look tomorrow. but its strange the rest of the head gaskit kit fitted what other engine could it be? :dontknow:

Could it be a 1.8 DX? Not familiar with the head gaskets on these, but VW do list a different gasket part no - 026 103 383 P. Looking at the cylinder head between which spark plugs the top hose from the rad join? 1&2 is 1600, 3&4 is an 1800.

think I might hold off with the head gasket change until someone confirms 11481 fits the 1.6.. can't be without the Mk1 for longer than 1 day

ok first off sorry to worrie you phill but your fine because your car is a 82.

gsf sold me the wrong kit in the first place, there is a different kit for 82 on and I had asked for 79!

when I returned it as the wrong part they only looked at head gaskits and they dont sell any others, they only sell the head gaskit kits for 79s and they have to order them in.

The other problem was it has the same gsf no 11481 but the part no is 049-198-012h
