Hot start problems are usually down to:

Duff accumulator
Leaking injectors
Cold start valve problem

hot start problem

WHEN I TURN OFF ENGINE I GET A SMALL THUMPING NOISE FROM PUMP/ACUMULATOR AERA NONE OF THEM LEAK BUT IS THIS NORMAL.
NO SMELLS OF PETRAL OR LEAKS FROM INJECTORS.
IS THE COLD START VALVE THE ONE WITH TWO FUEL PIPES ON FRONT OF BLOCK OR THE SINGLE PIPE ON THE INLET MANIFOLD.

Single fuel pipe tp manifold is cold start/ 5th injector, try disconnecting power supply to it. I disconnected mine and it's all good. Still starts on the button even with frost on the car.

The two pipes on the front of the block are the warm up reg. loads of posts on that elsewhere.

I get that knocking too, always put it down to residual pressures in the pipes, had it for a year and no problems yet!

Had exactly the same prob with the GTI - took it to an auto electrician for another problem, mentioned the starting - he replaced the Hall sender and it's been perfect since. But at ?70 for the repair it would have been better to replace the dizzy complete !!!!

I've got a similar problem on my cabby, it's the fuel accumalator that's gone and needs sorting on mine.

Well i broke down gutted first time ive ever had to call on the AA in 15 years. :(  The AA man was a right grump i told him it was the fuel pump, i new this as it was not making its normal rumbling noise but he still spent 20 minuets prodding at my pride and joy. After telling me it was the fuel pump he towed me home ,at least he helpped me push it in the garage.
Any way i brought a new pump ?87 nice and quite and no thumping after turn off      AND YES IT STARTS FIRST TIME ,EVERY TIME HOT ,COLD ,WET AND DRY WELL CHUFFED. :D
Thanks to everyones help i have learned alot about the fuel injection stuff in the last few weeks. it's amazing how many things can go wrong for one problem. I would like to give some advice for anyone with the same problem and thats follow the component cheaks in the manuel which are farily simple once you have red them about ten times. If that fails hope the car brakes down with the problem you are looking for or start replacing stuff with the cheapest stuff first.
