getting her running

hi
i have recently aquired a 83 mk1 gti 1800 cab, and i could use alittle help
ive replacd the fuel pump, ignition coil, dizzy, all filters and fluids.we have spark, compression and air…..and fuel…sort of
now, when i turn the ignition on, the tach goes to 1100rpm and when you try to start it goes up to 1500rpm (engine not running obviously) and only turns the starter motor when the screwdriver is placed on it
then i noticed fuel dripping from the pump, so i replaced the copper o rings, but still drips a tiny amount.
i thought ithen it was going to be a blockage so i undone the fuel hoses next to the airbox and let bubbly petrol out (trapped air i guessed)
still nothing
really want to get it running and mot'd, any help peoplewould be appreciated :)

Sounds like a poor earth somewhere, or a faulty coolant temperature sensor.

im certain its the ig wiring
so…5 wires
1 earth from bulkhead
2 (one black, one red/black)
2 (one black, one green)

also i guess its 1, 3, 2, 4 firing order??

grrr…still nothing
indicators work, as does horn….wipers not so
maybe they're from the same loom as the starter/ig coil??
theres always the possibility of a immobiliser? can't seem find one mind :banghead:  :banghead:

Try some easy start in the inlet trunking. That'll confirm base ig timing, spark and compression(valve timing)
Then you know its a fuel problem if it starts. The tacho does suggest earth problem, but if no star after above maybe HT prob(coil, leads, connections etc)
Lets know how you get on and if you need any more help bud

had to put it on hold till now, took all the seats n carpets out today to give her a good dry. tomorrow im going to go over all the earth points etc. overall its really solid, so im going to put the effort into her and use it till summer.
once iv gone over as much as i can, ill give her another go at starting and with any luck, i might have her ready for the mot by the weekend
if not, prepare for the barrage of questions  :|

oh and one more thing

DO NOT USE A SCREWDRIVER ON THE STARTER MOTOR WHILE YOU HAVE FUEL LEAKING!

sounds like a earth prob best thing to do is if u have jump leads. get 1 on the neg on the battery and clamp the other side on to the gearbox an see if it starts

gearbox earth was already bridged to battery. i pulled the black box out the ignition and connected all wires.turns over, fuel pump powers up, ignition lights come on and we have fuel pressure.
