Fuel Pump

Hi All, just got a mk1 j reg 1.8 gti. Fuel pump is broken and the engine will not turn over. Been told that this is due to lack of pressure as the fuel pump is not working. When you turn the iginition on a few times it will try to start for a couple of seconds and then stop? is this due to the pressure?

Also how hard is it to change the pump?

Thanks in advance :)

Firstly, are you getting a spark? Can you smell petrol after a prolonged period of turning the car over?

If yes and no then, make sure the fuel system isnt blocked first.

The pump is dead easy to change. Make sure you've got some new mounting rubbers and if you'e feeling particularly flash a new s/s cage from the quiff.

Also the wiring might have become a bit hard so i renewed mine it is an '83 GTI.

Make sure before you tackle it you've got the correct size spanners as it makes a big difference to undoing the hoses.

Let us know how you get on.
