Fuel pump not priming??

Hi have a problem that when starting my MK1 from cold you have to make sure you give it plently of gas.

I have been told that when you turn the key just before starting the car you should hear the fuel pump prime the system.

Anyone know why i my fuel pump does not prime??

how old is the fuel pump would have to be the first question

second does it run properly once it has started or do you have problems while it is running

Fuel pump has been replaced recently with a new Bosch unit. Car runs fine just on start up the car needs you to apply some gas?? Apparently you should just be able to turn the key a the car should start and run well

if the car is not a manual choke it will have an auto choke or colds start motor if this is not working properly it can cause problems on the start up i.e hard to start and lumpy running until warm they basically save you having to adjust the choke yourself to start and once engine is warm

if this is faulty may not be your pump at all

Assuming this is a GTI?

It will be either your Cold Start Valve of Warm Up Regulator. Do searches on here - loads of info.

I would say from your symptoms it's the WUR - but you do the seacrh and then do the checks.

Thanks for the info. But before I check any of that can anyone tell me if on there Gti when the ignition is turned on just before starting, can you hear activation of the fuel pump ie priming the system??

Sit in the car with the windows down. Turn the ignition until the ignition lights comes on, but don't trrn the engine over. You should hear a buzz come from the rear of the car (driver side, just in front of the wheel). If you don't hear the buzz, could well be the pump is stuffed or the fuel pump relay has had it. Search on here for ways to bypass the relay to test that the pump is working. New pump about 100.00, new relay about 30.00.

Good luck

Not all of the GTI's prime their pumps. My 83 tin top always primes but the wifes cabby does not, both start and run fine. The cabby has a lift pump in the tank so that might be the reason no priming is required, or perhaps the tank one does but you just cannot hear it.

hi
vid clip of my mk1 staring from cold ( its being sitting a couple of days ) starts on the button & you can here the pump prime , no throttle

But when i bought the car the pump didnt prime & the Cold-start-valve was also faulty , but the car still started no bother after about 4 turns.
How many turns of the starter are we talking roughly ?

Unless your injectors are leaking then it shouldn't matter whether the pumps runs momentarily before starting, the fuel will remain in the lines from when it was last turned off.

If the WUR is not allowing the metering head pin drop smoothly to the correct enrichment point for starting then it will take several turns to get it going.

The mk1 is a 1983 gti and the fuel pump is working fine just not making that buzzing noise when the ignition is turned on. Sure it is just something to do with the electrics. does anyone know which relay it is for the priming of the fuel pump? How much a new relay is? or any ideas on testing/repair of the relay?

The car just keeps turning over until you put slight pressure on the accelerator pedal, then the car starts straight away. Will try it again later on today if I get chance

Hi…i have a gti cab and they do prime before starting as the system needs a high pressure..
99.9% its a dodgy relay
The cabs do have a lifter pump in the tank but the main fuel pump still needs to prime

You say pumping the pedal gets it started which shows the pump is ok otherwise the engine would not run as the fuel pressure is really crucial on these engines

use the search on here for fuse/relay box and youll find an excellent description of all relays

i'm having the same problem, i don't know if they have a tank lift pump ( mine doesn't and there are no wires to go to it if there was)
the only reason i knew that it should prime is a friend of mine's golf does it. and starts on the button.
i'll let you know if i solve the problem today..
