Fuel Pump 1.8 injection

I have just bought a '82 Cab with a 1.8 injection motor. It starts and runs well but the fuel pump seems to be running ( and whining )continuously as long as the ignition is switched on.
No leaking fuel hoses and injectors are new.

Is this normal for the pump to run all the time or should it cut off when the system is pressurized and the engine not running ?

It shouldn't really run all the time, the relay will only run on ignition pulses which is basically whenever the engine is running or cranking.

Either the fuel pump relay is faulty or the previous owner just shoved a normal relay in which would cause it to run  all the time.

Pull the relay and have a look, it will have 5 pins, 4 are like a normal relay and the one extra one which is a bit smaller is the sense pin which senses the ignition pulses when the engine is running.

It won't do any harm to have the incorrect relay as it is really a safety feature in event of an accident which stops fuel being sprayed everywhere ;-)

Hope that helps!

have a look on the fusebox in slot 2, tell us what number relay is there. if its a 53 relay, its the wrong one! seen exactly this on a cabby i worked on.

see the fusebox sticky for more help on the fusebox :)

John,
the relay in the second slot has no number but looks like a 4 pin standard unit with pins 85 and 88 (solenoid) bridged with a capacitor.  There are no other relays on the top row and only 7,8, 10 and 12 filled on the bottom row.
As Mk 1 VW parts are hard to come by in Malaysia, do you have any suggestions for a generic relay type which would handle the Fuel Pump ? ?

I'm afraid not, the proper relay requires a rev counter input!  you might have luck finding other cars with k-jet, plenty of older volvos, saab, porche, merc, audi and ford had it.

as above, problem with having the wrong relay is in a crash the pump wont cut out, so its a safty issue rather than a running issue.

maybe get in touch with GSF, they have no trouble sending parts to euro land, might send you what you need. if you have the later blade fusebox the one you want is:
93592 - £23.20

early ceramic fusebox one is:
93590 - £19.80
