fuel injection woes

Hi,
The wifes convertible golf has been playing up recently.
Spent the last couple of days chasing my tail trying to sort it.
In town last week the car just konked out and would only restart after a 5 minute rest. The problem got worsse and she only got home with a helpful tow from a neighbour.
As I was working away I got the wife to run some tests over the phone ,bush surgery style and thought it was the coil breaking down.
Turns out that it is the fuel system so I ran some tests today.
Problem is the fault is intermittant so its not easy.
The other problem is that a previous owner fitted a security switch in the boot that appears to cut the fuel supply to the injecters.
I bridged the relay under the dash(the one with 2 huge copper spade terminals) and that didnt work.
I took off the pump and that still worked.
I did bridge the switch and cleaned the contacts that are on the battery.
Any ideas as im getting to my wits end.

Just a thought. It could be an old knackered distributor. If on it's way out the car will cut out when warmed up. Leave it and it starts, runs till warm and cuts out again. Is that what it's doing? If so relatively easy fix replacing the dizzy without spending hours scratching your head over the fuel system etc.

Does your nut in I know.. :banghead:  :banghead:

Having had similar problems I have learnt from some people who know their stuff, unlike me!

Start with the obvious, change the dizzy cap and rotor arm, spark plugs, HT leads, the lot cost about £40 from GSF which even if it doesn't cure the problem is great peice of mind and they are all components that can give problems when they get warm.

I would get a decent mobile auto electrician to get rid of the immobiliser if its an old one as they are a nightmare and can become really tempremental, a decent steering wheel lock is much more reliable…!

I think a new coil is less than £40 and then you've covered the lot.

Hope this gets you goin, it didnt work for me so I changed the fuel pump, metering head, fuel lines and several weeks wages later it looks like a wiring fault or fuse box but mine dunt sound the same fault as yours as mine just doesn't start..!

Don't get racked of with the old cow, its what old cars do, they're a ball ache when they are bad but they make up for it when they are goin well..

Good luck mate, dont be beaten
