Smokes after 20mins of driving

Hello All.

Got a 1983 GTI which had a complete engine rebuild done by BigBoy Toys know now as AMD tuning i think. They fitted a rebut 2.0 8v big bored engine in 2007 (done by the previous owner).

I bought the car in 2010 and the car was running perfectly with no issues apart from running a little fast at 2000 RPM. I have been working on the exterior and interior for the last 18 months getting it ready for the summer! Took it out a couple of time recently just to run it in and am getting issues!! Heres what happens;

Start it and start driving the car is fine with a little white smoke (putting this down to it sitting for awhile). After 15-20mins on a dual carriage way when I stop at lights the car blows out white/blue smoke out. They when I take off it does the same. I know the cars fuel and air needs to be set and its running a little fast but I have been told it has nothing to do with this. I have been asking a few mechanics but keep getting different answers from everyone!

The good guys at crazy quiff (got to give them a mention as they have helped me a lot!!) said it maybe the brake master cylinder leaking into the servo and where it is burning its smoking out of the exhaust. Checked this its not the case.

Took it too an engine shop and they have told me the following. Oil light is flashing and they are saying its the pump. Then the smoke they are saying the piston rings and the valve stem seals. They want to do the whole engine at a cost of £1300 and more if the piston rings are badly damaged. The guys who did the engine before do quite a lot of these so they would have built it well just thinking after 15k would it be needed to be done again. Just don't want to spend u necessary money and problems just keep occurring. I don't want to cut any corners just want to do it once and not again.

Sorry for such a long message. In the London area don't mind showing someone around here!

Dont think I will be cruising this summer!!:'(:'(

tbh, for that kind of money you could do an abf conversion and have lots of money left over! so not really worth it. engine rebuild imo is only worth doing if the engine is special in some way, and/or you can do it yourself.

if you dont fancy 16v then what i would do is get a mk3 golf 2.0 8v bottom end, they're pretty much bomb proof and way cheaper than the cost of rebuilding the old one. if you think about it 1300 is enough to buy another mk1 :lol:

Its not something as daft as the gauze in the breather on top of the rocker cover blocked ?

Cheers,

2.0 bottom end would be yes, you would need a tsr dizzy adaptor ring if your old block started out as a 1.8 but thats about it. only potential issue is if it has a 4 branch this may hit the tunnel
