Engine will not start - 1.6l GTI EG engine 1982 year - help

Hi ya all, Just stripped down and changed crank, cam, intermediate seals, timing belt and tensioner, distributer cap etc
marked and rechecked timing belt marks - mark on crankshaft TDC matches downward arrow on plastic timing cover and cam shaft pulley matches edge of rocker cover - all good
Refitted distributer, aligned oil pump drive horizontal, no1 cylinder position on rotor.
Changed fuel filter, leaked twice so had to fit new washers.  Do I need to bleed up the fuel and if so how do I do it?
Engine cranks over freely, but will not start, removed spark plug no1 and checked spark, good spark.

Should the engine attempt to start even if the distributer might be in the wrong position?

I've noticed when cranking the engine, there is a slight popping noise from the exhaust?

When ignition on or after cranking I can hear the fuel pump on the rear divers side working. is there any fuel cut off on the K tronic injection system

Can anyone shed some light on this problem please

Many thanks Darren (dazbat)

Sounds like the dizzys in wrong, hence the popping from the exhaust.

Bear in mind that it rotates as you push it in which means you have to start with the dizzy out of position effectively so that it goes back in the correct location as its pushed back in, and the oil pump drive has to be lined up correctly to do it, haynes manual explains it well.

Have you used the mark on the inside of the cam pulley?  I had similar problem on my 1.8.  Took me ages to realize.

pop rocker cover off and chack cams look like this when you have your cam mark lined up -> |\ /|

if not you're using the wrong mark or the cam sprocket is on backwards.  have you checked the piston actually is at TDC when the mark is lined up? shine a torch down #1 sparky hole and you'll see it.  I've seen the crank pulley mark be off by nearly 90degrees! its better to use the punch mark on the flywheel.

as for dizzy, once fitted twist the body so the rotor arm is lined up with the notch on the dizzy housing, ignore the intermediate shaft marks they arnt important.  fit lead #1 where the rotor arm is pointing and fit the rest 1 3 4 2 clockwise.
