engine whine linked to rpm

Post

Evening all,

I have been having a problem with a whining noise coming from the engine bay. I believe its coming from around the fan belt.
The noise gets louder in line with the engine rpm, when in gear or out of gear. The water pump was only changed around 18 months ago . Ive changed the V belt and also stripped down the alternator and changed the bearings but to no avail. Has anyone any more ideas?

Ive read on here the cam belt tension pully could be at fault? Is there a way to check this before messing around with the belt?

Cheers, Cav

Hi

try taking the fanbelt off and running it to see if the noise persists.
that way you'll know if its located cam or fan belt side.

check both belt tensions or possibly the cambelt tensioner is noisy.

here for a good time, not a long time

As above - rule out something rubbing first.

A couple of years ago, there was a lot of talk about non-genuine cambelt tensioners whining. Don't know if it's still an issue, or indeed when yours was changed! Brand new ones were doing it - not a sign of failure, just an annoying noise!
