Engine rebuild/overhaul - any ideas?
I've owned a Mk1 GTI for 8 years now, initially having it restored for my 21st birthday and then commuted in it to work for 4 years - such great fun and much better than these boring modern cars
I have since stored it in a garage waiting for the right time to bring it back to life. It's actually been in our family for all but two years of its life. I am currently obtaining quotes for the body work, but do not have a clue about the engine. Would any one have any suggestions on where I could get the engine overhauled?
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!
Cheers

Otherwise where are you based and someone might know a good garage?

I would love to do the rebuild myself but have competing pressures of work and study whilst also wanting a life and getting the car back on the road sooner rather than later.
Are there any reliable companies out there who do this sort of thing?

LOL at "wanting a life". Where are you based as people may need to know in order to say who's near you :dontknow:

Hi thanks for your reply. I've tried looking at the link but it doesn't seem to work :?

I've just spoken with an engineering firm today. They'll do the block but nothing else - is this standard practice? :? I need to find someone to take the engine out which I've since managed on their recommendation and drop it off to them.
The rehaul will cost £40 (1 hr charge) to assess and then depending on that who knows. He did say that if everything needed doing it could cost £1,000, but this was worse case scenario which he doesn't expect as it has been recently running. They did mention that you can buy a new engine in India, although not sure how true this is or of what quality….
The guy who is going to remove the engine is going to come and inspect and point out what the company will deal with and what they won't - they know each other well. He did say that it doesn't matter to him what he refits, so I could buy all the other bits brand new… radiator etc… He's charging £22/hour and will take 4 hours to remove, and double to put back in.
I'm based in Canterbury, the good olde Cathedral city.
Cheers for your help so far!
