Engine rebuild - how much should it cost?

After a full monty engine rebuild for my gti 8v.

Been quoted £1200 for head and block (pistons, rings, valves, bearings, water pump, prep and paint engine block, all new gaskets etc.

Southernengines.co.uk

The guy sounded very clued up and honest. Said the engine would be like new. 5-6 day turn-around too.

Does this sound reasonable?

Anyone recommend another specialist for a quote?

Searched and searched the web for someone in Devon but no joy!

Cheers.

Hi,

I have roughly the same question.  I sent my 16v in for a quote and it needs a lot of working doing.

I was quoted in the region of £550.

If I was you, I would just get them to overhaul the engine.  Things like water pumps and other ancillary items you can buy and fit yourself.  A garage will only put a markup on these items and you might end up paying over the odds.

As for painting the engine, is this something you need and if so, could you do it yourself?

kinda depends how much needs doing.
I paid £600 (albeit 15 years ago!) for a bottom end rebuild - needed a re-bore, new standard oversize pistons, crank re-grind and new shells, and new valve guides in the head. Gaskets and re-assembly was all done myself. So to me that sounds quite reasonable - especially if you are having new pistons and he's doing the dis-assembly and re-assembly.
I'd suggest you get it balanced at the same time! I didn't : (
